In part due to the recession ski reservations dropped last winter.
In spite of very good pre season sales coupled with great skiing conditions.
This drop in skiers comes after 5 seasons of development in the ski industry, and the numbers reduced from 1.25. 1.3 million two years ago to under a million last season.
Perhaps due to snowboarders giving the season a miss, and other skiers who would normally have two or more skiing holidays, merely took the one.
The independent travel sector fell by 15% and numerous low cost airlines reducing the no. of airplanes to several destinations.
Moreover tour operators witnessed their bookings going down by 15%.
However, the top 6 tour operators share remained at a healthy 73% and the French Alps carried on as the most popular ski destination with about 37% of the skiing market.
This meant that several ski operators cut the amount of ski chalets they operate this year.
Catered ski chalets in particular are going to see a fall in clients due to the fact that a catered ski chalet costs more for the tour operator with regards to staff and rent when it is not occupied.
It remains unlikely we shall benefit from the special offers which were available this winter.
Although prices are probably going to to augment, they probably won’t go up much.
This winter doubtless presents real problems for an industry which is affected by the results of the down turn, weakness of the pound, increased costs of fuel on top of large fixed running costs for ski holiday companies.

Getting from the plane to your skiing field has never been so easy.
These days there are a choice of airport transfer companies functioning from Geneva airport, which has meant the cost of airport ski transfers going down significantly.
It is no longer the case that there were merely a a small number of taxi operators to select.
Nowadays the skier has a range of choices, with most airport transfer companies using a fleet of new buses.
Moreover if you are staying in the Chamonix valley then a transfer from Geneva to Chamonix can take just an hour, and only cost 25 Euros.
The short transfer time, and the reduced costs of ski transfers from Geneva, has entailed that short skiing breaks are increasingly more popular as snowboarders decide to take less vacation time, however still wish to savor their skiing vacations.
This is set to continue as avid snowboarders are keen to go on a skiing break, but may not wish have a whole seven days out of the office in part due to the recession.
Another benefit of the reduced ski transfer costs is that the prices of ski trips continues to drop.
Snowboard rental is definitely more reasonable than it used to be, especially if one takes the chance to book on the internet before setting out snowboarding.
And whilst the weakness of the pound sterling compared to the euro makes things dearer in the snowboarding resort, if you are booking a catered chalet holiday then the bulk of the break is already paid for in sterling ahead of your arrival.

For even more interest let’s make it all inclusive vacation to Anchorage so we don’t have to worry about a lot of additional charges and we can focus on the journey. The trip to the largest city in America’s last unspoiled frontier will be one that you won’t soon forget.
You may choose to take a cruise from Vancouver, BC to Anchorage and enjoy the wondrous scenery along the way. May and September offer lower rates for those that are looking for the best value for their travel dollar. And you may choose to fly to Anchorage and take a short 3 day tour into the Alaskan wilderness. Keep in mind that travelling via water is generally less expensive than flying but will take more time, of course.
Anchorage is a good choice as a central drop off point to access other points of interests such as Mt. McKinley, Denali National Park and Chugach State Park. The opportunities to see some spectacular landmarks, wild animals and breathtaking scenery are at the very doorstep of this city.
The Alaska Zoo, Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, and the Anchorage Museum of History & Art are all conveniently located right in Anchorage. Summer months see average temperatures of 68 F so it may be a lot warmer than you might think.
And in the year 2009, Alaska celebrates its 50th anniversary as a member of the United States. On January 3, 1959, President Eisenhower signed the official declaration which made Alaska the 49th state. So there will be lots to celebrate in Anchorage and in Juneau, the capital of Alaska.
There are lots of activities right in Anchorage such as fishing for salmon and rainbow trout. And nearby the saltwater fishing for halibut is something an angler will just love to try.
For a comprehensive listing of all the activities available here, check out the link to Anchorage.net which is the official site of the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau.
