A Football Player’s Perspective - How to Make It to the Next Level of Play

Posted by admin on April 7th, 2008 — Posted in Sports Stuff

It was August 2003 and my team at the time, the Pittsburgh Steelers, was holding the first live scrimmage for training camp. As a rookie in the NFL I had practiced a number of times with the team, but this was the first time I was going to suit it up for a “full contact and tackle goal line scrimmage”. The set up was easy. The first and second team offenses would go against the first and second team defenses. The offense had four downs to score a touchdown. If they scored, they won; if they failed to score the defense won.

The first team offense and defense took the field first. The offense included Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, and Tommy Maddox who went against a defense consisting of Joey Porter, James Farrior, and Kendrell Bell. The opposing sides lined up against each other, the referee blew his whistle to start the play clock, Tommy Maddox called out the cadence, then the ball was snapped … … from that instant, the phrase “The Next Level” was defined for me.

“The Next Level” is a phrase commonly thrown around by athletes referring to the ability to play in a professional arena such as the NFL, NBA or MLB. To me “The Next Level” is not a title you gain, e.g. Professional Football Player; it is more a state of mind, an attitude and way of thinking when competing. Therefore, I have come up with three characteristics that I believe all athletes must posses in order to achieve “The Next Level”.

1. Play, Practice and Think with 100% Effort. It is as simple as that. You should have one speed and one speed only - FAST! There is no such thing as “half speed” or “walk thru”. Regardless of what people say, that is how we practiced and prepared in the NFL. Mike Holmgren said it best one day while practicing in the middle of December while preparing for the playoffs, “We run plays at full speed during the week so when the game comes it will be second nature and all you have to do is react.”

2. Be Able to “Flip the Switch” Once the Whistle Blows. This is probably the most mental of the three characteristics. Just picture in your mind a Cheetah stalking a gazelle and how meticulous, careful and alert it is as it sets up its approach. Once that Gazelle notices it is being hunted and starts running, the Cheetah “flips the switch” and accelerates to incredible speeds. Within seconds it has the Gazelle in its grasp and the hunt is over. This is the same way you should approach every play. An average football play lasts an average of 10 seconds or less, but when that ball is snapped a literal switch should be flipped in your mind and every ounce of energy should be released at that moment.

3. Dominate. This one word sums up every quality of those who achieve “The Next Level”. To dominate simply means competing to be the BEST. Does it mean you have to be the best? NO! It just means you are working, preparing, practicing and believing YOU CAN be the BEST. You may never achieve it and if you do there will always be someone that will be better. But if you compete and approach everything with 100% effort, dedication, commitment, and hold yourself accountable, you will dominate. While I was playing with the Philadelphia Eagles during our run up to the Super Bowl in 2004, starting tight end and 3-time Pro Bowl selection Chad Lewis would always tell the team, “Time to DOMINATE!” That is literally how you should approach every conditioning drill, lift, practice, meeting and play as an athlete. You approach it no other way!!

When I witnessed the explosive power, speed and attitude that my teammates displayed that late summer day in Pittsburgh, I came to the conclusion that “The Next Level” is not a title you gain when you make it to the NFL, it is truly a state of mind and way of life for those that achieve greatness in athletics.

5 Tips For Motivating Your Gymnast - A Basic Overview

Posted by admin on April 3rd, 2008 — Posted in Sports Stuff

For every gymnast, there is a different motivational need. This
is the same in anything, really — we all have different ways in
which we are given confidence in ourselves, no matter what we
do. Whether we write or draw, sing or dance, we all need
encouragement. Indeed, gymnasts need encouragement in their
sport more than many, because they are actually attempting to
train their bodies and their minds in order to move correctly,
to be able to take the strain of the sport. As a parent of a
gymnast, there are many ways in which you can motivate your
child. Some of them might work. Some of them might not. Find
what is most comfortable for you and your gymnast and stick with
it. It’s easier for you both that way.

Show Interest

First and foremost, in order to motivate a child–most certainly
a gymnast–you need to show interest in what they are doing. If
he or she feels as though you are uninterested in the sport as a
whole, then they may become discouraged all together. How do you
show interest, even if gymnastics aren’t your absolute favorite
sport in the world? Actually, it’s pretty easy. First, you can
warm up with them before they train. Join in with their
stretches or their jogging, if you can. It feels good and it
sets an example. If you don’t want to run around with them, then
you can ask them about their days at practice. What did they do?
What did they learn? Many young gymnasts will jump at the chance
to teach their parents something. It gives them the sense that
you have things to learn from them, and all around, it is a
wholesome feeling. Finally, it’s a good idea to attend at least
one of their practices every once in a while. Make the effort.
It will be worthwhile for everyone concerned. Also, good
communication with the coaches can be established there, which
can certainly be beneficial.

Education

Education about the sport is a great way to motivate your young
gymnast! For the enthusiast, this should be an easy matter. Just
take care not to overwhelm your child with too much information
at once. There is no dearth of exciting information out there
about gymnastics, from the types of maneuvers that can be made
in the many variations of the sport: rings, vaulting, parallel
bars, and so on., to the salaries of professional gymnastics
specialists in circuses and theatrical shows, to the
accomplishments of gymnasts around the globe. This can certainly
foster interest. If indeed it does, then encourage them to
pursue it!

Positive Feedback

When your child is involved with gymnastics, it is always good
to offer them positive feedback, no matter what they do. Instead
of pointing out flaws directly, you should give them praise for
what they did correctly in their drills or in their
competitions. Don’t allow them to get down about doing things
incorrectly or incompletely — instead, keep their spirits up by
telling them to repeat what they did correctly before. This is
usually used in conjunction with constructive criticism, and it
generally works the best out of all of the motivational methods
for the most people. For some, it can be somewhat irritating;
some actually prefer honest criticism so that they can improve
by knowing what they did wrong. For the majority, it is
heartening to hear someone say, “Well, this was really
impressive…”

Constructive Criticism

Used in conjunction with positive feedback, constructive
criticism gives an athlete an idea of what needs improvement in
a tactful and non-offensive way. If your child is particularly
sensitive to criticism, it may be a good idea to just offer
positive feedback, but most generally, the combination of the
two works nicely together. There is a note you must be aware of
before you give your child any amount of constructive criticism,
and that is its timing. It’s advisable not to do so right after
they have finished their training session. Wait until just
before they start the next one, so they have some perspective on
what they need to improve upon, without feeling as though you’re
ready to “shoot them down,” so to speak. They’ll definitely
appreciate it.

Competition/Reward

Finally, for the more experienced gymnast, there is the concept
of competition-and-reward in the sport. This is sometimes used
by coaches to encourage their athletes to compete against one
another and to improve, all with the promise of some kind of
reward. It may be a pizza party, it may be a day off, it really
depends upon what level of the sport your child is in. You can
use it to your advantage, too, in just about any way you can
imagine!

Take note that punishment is not one of the recommended
motivational methods. Punishment is always negative and
decreases motivation in the long term. In fact, it may even lead
to the development of phobias or aversions in the future.

With this in mind, I hope that your gymnast is motivated and
successful!

How to Pick & Use a Tennis Racket Like the Pros

Posted by admin on April 2nd, 2008 — Posted in Sports Stuff

Tennis is a great sport, especially if you don’t mind skinned knees, muscle spasms, and twisted backs.

We played tennis all summer when I was a kid. Our rackets were not of the rich kid variety. They were of the Hey! Look what I found in the garbage can variety.

We didn’t know that there were things to know to properly pick a tennis racket. It was more like the racket picked us. But I do remember that after World War II a local hardware store had a tremendous sale on tennis rackets.

You could get one for $5.00 if you could come up with the money.

Somehow we got the money and a number of the kids got new rackets. Surely we were all on our ways to the pros.

These rackets were not of the best quality.

One day a paste on label came off my racket. Under the label pressed into the wood above the grip was the word REJECTED.

Anything could set me laughing in those days.

While I was rolling around on the concrete of the tennis court a small crowd gathered around me. They soon figured out why I was laughing because I was pointing above the grip.

They pulled the labels off there rackets. Of course, they all were rejects. That’s why the strings came loose, they were warped, and the grip material was falling off.

We held an emergency meeting on how we could sue the sporting goods store, but we all knew how that would turn out. None of our dads were attorneys. They all lived on the east side of town.

Some of us went back to the store. The store played dumb! “Gee, we didn’t know that they were rejects!”

I like to watch the pros play tennis. But tennis is a game that you also can play even into your later years. Some tennis players are even older than I am and that is pretty darn old.

A Good Samaritan pig donated his aortic valve to me this spring and maybe I’ll take the game up again. That’s if I can get a gazelle to donate me a new set of legs.

Choosing a Racket

There are lots of sites such as http://www.tennisracquets.com that help you select a racket. The quoted items are from that site.

Grip Size

A too small grip can cause “injuries of wrist and elbow.”

A too large grip will make you “squeeze the grip tighter. That will put an extra tension on your arm preventing the relaxed swing.”

“There is a way to measure your grip size with a ruler. Your correct grip size basically is the distance from the tip of your ring finger to the farthest main vertical line in your hand. I would not advise to rely on the ruler in this case.

“The better way to determine the correct grip is to measure it holding the racquet. Hold the racquet with one hand and slide the index finger of the other hand in between the tips of your fingers and the base of your palm. If the grip is too small–there will not be enough room for the index finger. If there is extra room–the grip is too large. The correct grip is when the index finger fits perfectly.” (see the illustrations at http://www.tennisracquets.com).

Head Size

Starting from 60 square inches in wooden frames it could be as large as 145 square inches in some exotic frames. There is a legal limit of 135 square inches for playing Official Tournaments.

The “sweet spot” in a racket is larger if the head size is larger. That is where you get the most power. So what does that tell you?

Weight and Balance

Your frame can be head heavy or head light.

Remember this: the part of the momentum of the racket is transferred to the ball. The total momentum is the same before and after you hit the ball. Where do you want most of that final momentum to be? I would guess that you want it on the ball. But what good does it do you if the head is too heavy. You’ll probably miss the ball. The racket might spin you around into a tizzy.

Conclusions

• “Lighter and head heavy racquets are better for the slower game as they deliver more power. Heavier even balanced or headlight racquets are better for advanced players to have a faster game without injuries and to have more control.

• “Tour professionals use custom balanced and usually heavier frames.

• “Any frame could be made heavier and balanced the way you like with the lead tape, but do not forget to check the facts about stiffness and flexibility.”

Go to the site http://www.tennisracquets.com for more information and references.

Time to Get at the Meat of this Article

Here are some things that I’ve noticed the pros like to do with their rackets.

• The pros like to stare at the sweet spot in a manner of worship. Therefore you should have your favorite religious icon embedded in the strings.

• The pros like to throw their rackets across the court. Therefore you should have it designed by an aerospace engineer for smooth sailing and landing.

• The pros like to smash their rackets against the ground. You should have several rackets designed by a mechanical engineer that will take pounding against concrete, asphalt, or grass.

• The pros like to yell at the linemen. Therefore you should have a bull horn mounted on your racket so you can really tell him what for!

You might want to practice your tantrums in front of a full-length mirror. You don’t want to look bad on the court do you? That brings up the point of dress. Well, you’re on your own there. Try to smile when you are practicing that racket fling with your new aerodynamic racket!

Spanish Riding School, Vienna

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2008 — Posted in Sports Stuff

Brief history

Cavalry tactics started to constitute an art around 402BC, but it was not until the sixteenth century that the idea of classical riding took root throughout civilised Europe. During this era, riding enjoyed an equal status with music, art, architecture, literature, philosophy and sculpture, since similar skills and disciplines were required. In some circumstances, it was said that the acquisition of this art could make a man more honourable as he learned from his stallion’s forbearance, courage and physical prowess.

The Imperial Riding School in Vienna was built for teaching and practice of the young nobility and also for the training of the horse in the art of riding and in battle. The work of the School first under royal, then imperial and finally Austrian state patronage then flourished. Today, it is the only riding academy in the world that has been cultivating this art - in its purest form - for over 400 years.

Together with the opera house, the Spanish Riding School became Austria’s jewel in the crown, since no other riding school boasted such a structured continuance of purpose and method. It was looked up to worldwide as the mecca of dressage. Only in Vienna could one be sure of finding the correct techniques and structured training methods of the young horse through to the most venerable adult stallions.

Today, male riders are carefully selected from within Austria itself. If they are found to have sufficient talent and dedication, training will start at sixteen and end at sixty. It takes eight years to train a horse; it takes a lifetime to become a highly competent rider.

The Spanish Riding School occupies a number of buildings on the Michaelerplatz and the Josefsplatz by the Hofburg in central Vienna. Performances take place in the Winter Riding School.

Performance dates are listed on www.viennaticket.com website, where you can order tickets online. Since the 80-minute performances are often sold out weeks or even months in advance, you should reserve seats or standing room as early as possible. Other options include a visit to the Lipizzaner Museum next to the stables and/or take a tour of the federal stud farm in Piber where the horses are bred and raised.

Peter Handel-Mazzetti is the owner of ATT Travel Agents, one of the leading ticket agents in Vienna offering a complete range of tickets for concerts, opera, theatre, musicals as well as sightseeing tours.
