Our church has charged all parents of young children to read a Bible story each day to our children so reading from my son Noah’s children’s Bible has become a part of our regular bedtime routine. Sometimes I try to hit stories that relate to the current holiday in the Christian calendar and other times we simply pick stories that look interesting to him (there are pictures to help with the choice). There are also stories that he considers to be favorites–Noah and the Ark of course, Zacchaeus (because he loves the song), and Jonah.
I have been very happy with his eager responsiveness to the stories and to reading them. He will even pull out his children’s Bible to share the stories with his stuffed animals–or at least some version that he remembers or can guess from the pictures.
One day when he related the story of Jonah to Fred the green rabbit I was struck by how close to home the story strikes–for Noah, for me, for all of us.
Noah’s version of Jonah:
God told Jonah to go to a special place but Jonah didn’t listen. He went on a boat to another city instead. So God sent a storm and threw Jonah into the water and a giant fish swallowed him up. Jonah was in time out in the fish for three days before God told him he could get out of the fish. Then Jonah went where God told him to go. The End.
Noah to Fred: “You have to listen to God or you’ll get in time out too!”
Noah’s story is simplistic but then so is the essence of Jonah’s story. The moral of the story is simply that we must listen to God.
If only it was as simple as that!
Of course we know that. No matter what our religion or creed we know that we must listen to God. We know we must follow the rules and guidelines that God has set down for us.
Children, like Noah, know they must follow their parents’ rules and dictates or there will be consequences. Often those consequences involve a time-out for Noah so the story of Jonah strikes home with him.
Obviously as he grows older the rules that he must follow will come from many different sources and many will be unspoken. This is why his father and I now set down rules and boundaries for him. Obviously it makes our home life easier if he follows set rules and other rules are necessary for his protection, but even more important we are teaching him to follow the rules that God and society have set down for him.
We learned rules as children for the same reasons but as we grow up and learn to abide by the rules of God and society the punishments we receive change and become more subtle. We no longer are put in time out but instead encounter punishments that more often come in a social or monetary form.
For many of us it becomes increasingly easy to ignore these punishments without the threat of a big whale to swallow us up.
As a Christian, I think God’s message to us is simple. He wants us to love him and to show that love by loving and helping others. All of Jesus’ lessons and teachings can be tied to that simple theme.
It is simple and yet so very hard. What have you done this week to love and honor God? What have you done this week to love and help others?
What worries me is that some people get so wrapped up in following other messages they have gleaned from the Bible that they often overlook or directly contradict these essential truths. While the Bible and its teaching are incredibly complex, one can find the truth by simply studying Jesus’ teachings and actions. There is truth in the simple question–What Would Jesus’ Do?
It is simple and yet so very hard. What have you done this week to love and honor God? What have you done this week to love and help others?
Of course the difficult challenge is the fact that by not doing these things we are just as bad as Jonah. We are not doing what God has told us to do.
Don’t look now, but isn’t that a big whale coming up behind you?

Strange as it may sound, there are payoffs when we don’t succeed.
What you may exclaim?? Before you dismiss this statement read the following explanation on what payoffs you might be gaining from not succeeding.
Ask yourself the following questions.
1. What do I get to avoid?
-Responsibility, love, success, visibility, etc.
2. Who do I get to punish and/or love?
-Parents didn’t love me enough.
-I will not be happy to punish mom and/or dad, who wants me to be happy.
-Childhood was really awful–nobody cares anyway no matter what I do.
-I won’t let my parents say, “I guess we didn’t do so badly after all.” i.e. parents are assuaging their guilt by owning my success.
-I will not do better than my parents because I don’t want to upstage them–because I love them.
-I will not do better than my boss because I don’t want to upstage him/her.
-I will not do better than my husband because I am afraid I will loose his love.
3. Righteous emotion or real feeling?
-Guilt, anger etc. I will not express the emotion honestly and let it go.
-I will complain to everyone, but the person who is involved who can do something.
4. What guarantee am I holding out for?
-Promise me that it will work, without my need to work or change, before I will make a commitment to succeed.
-Promise me I will be ‘front page news’ if I succeed.
5. Am I manipulating with Self-pity?
-Am I playing victim so everyone will feel sorry for me.
-Am I being a martyr, so I can suffer in silence.
6. Am I feeling Better-than or Less-than?
-You don’t realize how great/or less than I am.
7. What am I afraid of loosing if I succeed?
8. Am I avoiding to strive for my success because I fear failure.
-I will be embarrassed if I fail, therefore, I won’t strive for my deepest desires.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not be be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Marianne Williamson (Sometimes attributed to Nelson Madela as he quoted Marianne Williamson in one of his speeches.

Spring, summer, fall, winter: These are the four seasons. In spring things sprout, in the summer things grow, in fall things are gathered, and in winter things are stored. By observing this, the order of the four seasons, we can see that there is an order, or sequence, that takes place in the nature. There are specific times for all tasks. You don’t plant corn in the winter. You don’t store things in the summer. You don’t harvest in the spring. The same thing can be said about our personal lives. There are certain times to make things happen and times that we shouldn’t do anything. As the writer said, To everything there is a season and purpose under heaven. Nature teaches us that things out of time and season usually die, or are ineffectual. What about the seasons of your life?
Are your movements aligned with the seasons of your life and the seasons of nature, or are you just pushing as hard as you can trying to force things to happen when it isn’t time. Are you patient? Can you hold on and wait for the right time? If you cannot and if you are pushing, making things happening, and not finding any joy afterward, or are afraid, lagging, and missing the opportunities that present themselves, you are out of season. If you are not careful you will be out of time. In many cultures, and in the Taoist tradition in particular, awareness and knowing when to move and when to be still are very important for a happy, successful life. If your life is not victorious, you must work to align yourself with the times and seasons.
The first step is to be aware of your thoughts, behaviors, and your emotions. Be aware of the positive things that you do and the negative things. Observe your behaviors to find a pattern. What pushes your buttons and why? What pleases you? What do you do with your anger? What do you do with your fear? These questions and many others are very important to contemplate. And you will only become a responsible individual living in the times and seasons when know the answers. You can find these answers through sitting meditation, Tai-Chi, Yoga, or just observing yourself.
The Sufi mystic Hafiz once said that sitting in one spot alone for three days and nights without eating, sleeping, listening to music, or even leaving for a trip to the bathroom, could teach any person more about himself and the world than any great teacher or spiritual workshop. Try it some day and you will find it true.
One time I rented a small hotel room. I didn’t go as far as Hafiz said. I ate and I went out about two hours an evening to spend time with my spouse. The rest of my time was spent doing various forms of meditation and Chi-Kung. Instead of becoming dull and bored, as I expected, my mind became very active. It began to voice many questions: What does life mean to you? Who are you really? What do you really want out of life? Are you a failure? This happened hour after hour with one question repeated over and over until I gave a response. I couldn’t just make up any answer, or lie, or make up an excuse. It was me asking myself questions. How can you lie to yourself? (Some people are very good at doing that, but I have never developed that skill.) I spent five days and nights meditating and answering prying question. At the end of my little retreat I felt that something inside had changed.
As I began to think about my life and to answer questions that I never considered, I began to realize what the meaning of life was for me. I began to see that there are seasons and purposes for everything, and that the secret to knowing the correct time and seasons only comes by knowing yourself. Do you know yourself? If you don’t you cannot know God. You cannot know the universe. You cannot know about life fully until you know yourself.
Work hard to know yourself and you will learn when to move. You will learn when to plant new thoughts, ideas and behaviors. You will know when to water the seeds that you have planted so they will grow. You will know when to reap the fruit of your work in joy, and you will know when to hold onto that fruit, when to store it, so that you will have sustenance through the darker, colder times in the winters of life. If you do this, know the times and seasons, you will lead a life of joy and contentment. By moving in harmony with nature and the world, you will overcome the world and become more a creative force in the world. “Know thyself, oh man,” that your dreams might come true.

You’re not in Sagara anymore!!!
Could that be an understatement…?
As the months have found me in new territory delving further into the aspects of tests and initiations. I have found myself amidst the busy and bustling life of New Yorkers. Coming from the serene and contemplative consciousness of the east into the everyday hustle and bustle of subways, unheard of noises, and people with serious yet impersonal style of interacting with one another. (talk about a culture shock) It appears that not smiling and not looking one another in the eye is the way to survive in this town especially on the subways. My own insight into the subways is that having encountered many annoying solar plexus upsets after leaving the subway. It came to me that I was actually delving into the “Astral world of Maya” or in better terms the energies of people’s fears, doubts, pride, lust, greed and insecurities. As for me it is part of the nature of the Bodhisattva to continue to be compassionate and to understand that amidst this is the inner need in all of us to want happiness and forgo suffering.
New Yorkers were all out to see the wonderful display of Cristos Gates, beautiful saffron cloth banners in all of Central Park, I felt a wonderful feeling of unity while walking through them and a meditative way of looking at how nature could be changed with the flow of the these beautiful banners amidst the bustle of the city. It was a peaceful and beautiful experience to see New Yorkers partake in this awareness. It slowly changes my perspective of the coldness that is in the faces of these New Yorkers. Ah, maybe I have some compassion setting in.
Currently the biggest tests that have come in to my life is that of trying to integrate a part of myself to be a meaningful and productive servant to those I come in contact on a daily basis. As a substitute Montessori teacher, also an Administrative Assistant, a Spanish Teacher (it would appear that my past embodiments have caught up with me) in Brooklyn, New York, traveling on those lovely subways for 45 minutes each way every day to where I find myself situated with personnel that yet realize I am there to help and not to be in opposition to them and their ideas. Well, maybe that can be one of my tests to overcome and see them with compassion, I believe it is.
As my thoughts and consciousness changes so will theirs I hope. If not I can say that I gave it my best. In regards to this it is hard for my fellow co-workers that they have been told that the building, the YWCA, will be renovating apartments and the school is being evicted, so make room for economic improvements and financial advancement.
This concern can change ones attitude, and bring about competitiveness. It will close in one year. As I bring compassion and kindness to the situation I understand not to take it personally. (One test high on my list) I understand their plight.
The children are always so innocent and precious they just want to learn how to get along in this world. Imagine coming from such a pure state, and then having to come here and learn how to cope with all this. Children are pure love, and all they want to do is give it to you. Isn’t this why so many people just love to be near young babies.
Oh, some good things do happen on the subways, if you can keep an open mind, I saw a wonderful Mexican family interaction, it was great so loving with the two children and the parents, it was like they were smiling and happy and not concerned with being impersonal. (Also, I get to catch up on my spiritual reading)
I seem to be in this place in time for more life lessons coming from the eastern to the west and one of the best places to be is New York where you can find the diversity of every culture and country. My only aspiration is that amongst it all I will find the inner strength to share my compassion with them as I learn and experience their lives also.
If you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere! Mmm is that so I still have to hurdle the humidity, cold, subways, and Impersonal personalities, but I AM enjoying it for I know I am one step closer to my goal and that initiation turns into a victory won…Namastae!!

Qi circulates along specific pathways in the body as well as in the atmosphere, just as we transform food we eat to our own use, so do we generate Qi to maintain and develop ourselves.
Regulated with rhythm of music in relaxation mode enables us to extract a greater supply of Qi from the air and the body accumulates it like a battery stores electricity.
This energy of Qi gives body vitality and nourishes the consciousness. The Qi absorbed by the brain is responsible for unfolding the mental ability and psychic powers. Dr Harold Burr of Yale, many decades ago, found that all living things are surrounded by a web of energy and electro dynamic fields that could be measured by voltmeters. These life fields, as he named them, are the link between mind, body, and cosmos, Burr believed. He found that changes inside the body, changes in one’s brain waves or heartbeat, were the result of the changes in these energy fields or what is better known now as the Qi.
By harmonizing altered states of consciousness, rhythms of recitation, breathing, and music, we spiral into the reserves of the mind. Once this connection is made awareness follows and the sphere of conscious perception grows larger. Through expanded awareness we can control and select the perceptions that we want. We become self developed.
Life should be a ceaseless stream of happiness, and yet the lives of many people are full of fears. Fear creates tensions and poisons the climate of one’s life. Joy of learning is another basic tenet of the maximum learning system and perhaps the sense of exhilaration is one more norm we’ve forgotten.

We have given a lot of thought, paid an indecent amount of money and taken much action over the years to change the way we are. To become ‘better’ human beings. To make the most of this life we have. To get rid of the behaviours that are counterproductive. The behaviours that cause harm to us and others.
We have attended numerous courses, workshops and seminars around the world. Only to find that the bottom line is that no one can do it except us. No one can change the way you are except you.
Adding a technique or two, or focussing on a behaviour that causes upset does not work. In order to ensure you are constantly happy, healthy and more at peace with the world you need to change the way you think about yourself.
Have you ever thought about the way you describe yourself? When you are asked who are you? What do you reply? Do you start with your occupation or your role? If you did you replied in the way you have been trained by society. But you answered the wrong question. You answered the question What are you? Or What do you do?
So when asked: Who are you? What is the reply?
One answer would be, ” I am a human being”. OK. Now turn it on its head. What about: A being that happens to be human? How does that fit? Does that describe who you are?
But, what does that mean? What does it mean to be a being that happens to be human?
Aren’t you just playing on words?
No. To us it is important. It changes the way you view yourself. For us the phrase; ‘ a being that happens to be human’ means someone who is unfinished, uncompleted. Someone who is on a journey. Someone who is becoming something. Someone who has a natural tendency to grow. Someone who is free to choose whatever path they want. Someone who, left alone, naturally chooses positive and constructive paths. Someone who has a natural tendency to grow, to develop, to achieve their natural potential.
We know, it sounds scary, but just think about this for a moment. Wherever you go for a bit of peace and quiet go there and think for a moment.
I am a being. Someone who naturally chooses what is best for me. Someone who is always becoming. Someone who has an inherent talent to take care of themselves. Someone who is naturally motivated to grow, to develop and to achieve their natural potential.
This means: not only are you are unique but you have a natural ability to move towards fulfilling your potential.
Take a minute and look back over your life. Note down all the major events good and bad. Now review them. When you look back were they turning moments in your life? Can you see a benefit? Can you see how you are choosing what is best for you even though it didn’t feel like it at the time?
Every child has an inner timetable for growtha pattern unique to him… Growth is not steady, forward, upward progression. It is instead a switchback trail;
three steps forward, two back, one around the bushes,
and a few simply standing, before another forward leap –Dorothy Corkville Briggs
Your Child’s Self-Esteem, (1975).
We each have our own story. Our own life with its ups and downs, with its variety of experiences and problems. But eventually when we look back we can see the benefits..
The only thing that slows down your growth and makes it more difficult to achieve your natural potential is You. The way you see yourself.
If you:
see yourself as an attachment to another person
allow yourself to be in fear of or in awe of another person
let others rule your life
depend on others
blame others for your feelings and behaviours
hide the real you through forced or affected humour
spend time building a faade to hide behind
display defensive behaviour to defend yourself against…….
then you have lost your uniqueness .
Your role is now to serve the other person. You are a slave to their dictates. The minute you are drawn to do something that is driven by another’s agenda you are no longer choosing what is naturally best for you. You are choosing what they want you to do. You are accepting that they are the ‘expert’ in your life. Another person knows what is best for you.
The bottom line is that you are the only person who really knows you. You are the only one who has had all the experiences that make up you. Others have witnessed and experienced parts of you but you are the only one who has seen, heard and lived the lot. You are the only one with the built in self motivation to grow, to develop to achieve your natural potential.
How do you do it?
Trust yourself. You are unique. You have a natural ability to move towards your potential. When you trust yourself you naturally flow and are able to move towards what you are supposed to become. When you trust yourself fear disappears. You no longer feel the need to protect yourself from this and that. You no longer feel that you ought to, should do or must do in order to meet the expectations of others.
Trust enables you to grow and creates energy. Trust enables you to be who you are. A fully functioning natural unique individual.
These are our few thoughts to change your inner state.
You are unique, and if that is not fulfilled,
Then something has been lost. –(Martha Graham)

I recently received a phone call from a gentleman from California by the name of Bob. Bob’s elderly voice was electrified with passion as he thanked me for a short piece of writing that he had recently read in Science of Mind Magazine that included the paragraph:
“If you have a dream to make a difference with other people, even if it’s off the beaten track of mainstream acceptability, go for it with purposeful patience and perseverance. Follow the breadcrumbs of your passion, and even if you don’t know exactly where they are leading you, you will never be disappointed by where you end up. Living in faith can balance the odds even when it appears you’re going against all the odds.”
Bob went on to say that those words spoke directly to him. Bob told me that he’d been in the trucking industry for the past 40 years and had recently had the thought that he’d like to write something for his fellow truckers but hadn’t felt that anyone would want to read what he wrote. When he read my passage, he knew that he had to follow his own ‘breadcrumbs of passion’ even though he didn’t know where they were leading him.
So, truckers, watch out. Passion-filled Bob is coming your way.
Bob’s call has led me to my own new Purpose Project that I’m calling the Purposeful Praise Project. Bob’s call made my day as a writer. To know that my words could make such a difference in a 76-year-old man’s life is very satisfying. It got me to thinking, how many people have made a similar contribution to my life and how many of them have I missed acknowledging and appreciating? Too many to count, but not too many to start ‘purposefully praising’ through phone calls, letters or emails.
I can’t really claim the project as original to me. One of my clients who is also a dear friend of many years, recently created Project Pen Pal. He’s writing hand written letters to the people in his life that have made a significant contribution to him. I’m the proud recipient of one of his letters. It’s tucked away in my special notebook where I keep such treasures.
And so it goes. Purpose, passion and play shared among each other and in the sharing it multiplies and from such multiplication comes our World On Purpose. Thank you Bob and Eric for keeping the flow flowing.
And that’s my life on purpose from the paradise found of Flat Rock NC.

The man went to work that morning. As soon as he walked in the door he heard someone comment on something bad. The person continued with the negative and said that the negative would really happen to them at work.
There were other people listening but none of them agreed with him. They spoke to each other. They started bringing up the positive that was happening when the negative storyteller came rushing through the doorway yelling, “See, I told you!”
They all stopped working for a minute and started praying.
Then one man turned and walked over to the negative storyteller.
“What are you doing?”, the man asked.
“Just telling you guys what would happen. And I was right,” the happy looking negative storyteller gloated.
The man shook his head slowly while he said, “Do you realize that many years ago someone already said that would happen too?”
“What do you mean?”
The man took a deep breath and said, “Well, don’t you know that this world was made by someone that did just that? He said that which could not be seen as if is already could be. And then it was.” He smiled at the other man.
The one that had been the negative storyteller seemed to really be thinking that one through.
The man started again, “This is explained more in Romans 4:17. Look it up and if you have any questions let me know…”
The now more curious, previously negative storyteller said, “So you can do that too?”
The man, knowing that there were more details then coud be be explained right then, just told him, “Yes, it’s all in the Bible. Don’t miss it. Read it. It’s God’s contract for you. Choose God!. He always gives good! Always. And I’m sure that you want the good not the bad…” The man smiled.
The men both went back to work. The now more positive storyteller had decided that he would find out more about how this world was created. He decided to see how this affected his own words by reading his Bible when he got home…

Are you ready for your inspirational thought for the day? When you first read it, it may seem too simple. However, if you think about it for even a moment, you’ll see that the implications are profound - and inspiring. This is t:
“Whatever goals you have in your life, and no matter where you are start, someone has succeeded at something similar or even more difficult, starting with less than you have.”
There may be some of you out of the six billion on the planet for whom this doesn’t apply. Perhaps some really want to do things that are far beyond anything a man or woman has ever done, so I apologize to the fifty of you. As for the rest of you, what do you want?
Want a loving partner? Somebody less attractive, charming and intelligent than you is getting happily married somewhere today. Want to create a new food and successfully market it? You probably already have more resources than Harlan Sanders had when he started trying to sell his Kentucky Fried Chicken. Want a big beautiful home? Three or more people in your town have such a home after being poorer than you at some point in their lives.
Is This An Inspirational Thought?
Anthony Hopkin’s character, in the movie “The Edge,” says “What one man can do, another can do.” He goes on to kill the bear that is stalking him. What if you aren’t as strong, as rich, or as smart as others? Not all those who have done great things were always stronger, smarter and richer than you. Just like them, you can learn the right things, take the right actions and put in the effort. This is why this is an inspirational thought. See where some people started from, and you’ll find yourself saying, “Hey! If he can do it, I can too.”
I told a guy he could save money to buy a home, and he claimed he just didn’t have any extra to save. He forget that he already knew several people who were making less money than him and surviving just fine. If he lived like those people for a while, couldn’t he bank the difference? (Just say yes - finding reasons why you can’t do something is a terrible habit to encourage.)
Would you like a date for this Friday? How? Here’s a clue: An awkward young man asked a woman friend why he couldn’t get a date. She asked if he had asked anyone out. After he thought about it for a moment he said, “No.” “That’s why,” she told him. Better example: I know a jerk who always had a date - after asking twenty women a week out. These are lessons, aren’t they? If a geek and a jerk can get a date, you can too, right?
Colonel Sanders drove around in an old van living off his social security check as 900 restaurants told him they were not interested in his recipe. One eventually said yes, and he eventually made millions of dollars. Maybe this could inspire us to try something more than three times?
People come here with little money and speaking little English and end up owning restaurants and stores. If you want to own a restaurant or store, find out how they do it. There are almost three million millionaires in the U.S. If you really want millions, read their stories, talk to them, and learn how to make money. Whatever you want to do, someone has done it, starting from a worse situation than yours. If they can do it, you can too. This is your inspirational thought for the day.

Watch the waves. Watch small waves, and watch the large waves. Watch them coming in, on the shore untiringly. What do we see? We see the passion. We see the energy. We also wonder about the purpose of the non-stop motion of the waves.
Waves have the undying passion of meeting the shore. They never get tired doing that. One after another, they keep on coming. They keep on smashing on the shore and then subsiding. Then comes another wave. This goes on and on. We have watched the waves so many times that we don’t pay attention to this passion. This passion can teach us a lot. Download some screensavers with videos of waves. Watch them from time to time. You will slowly get that visual of waves associated in your mind with unceasing passion.
The first teaching is not getting tired. Waves don’t get tired. They have a job to do - meet the shore again and again. So they keep on. When we have a job to do, we must behave like that. Non-stop work without getting tired. We will surely get tired, but a visual of waves will remind us immediately that we have work to do and we will continue despite all the tiredness.
The second teaching is work without any break. Have we seen waves taking a small break? Never. Same way, we are passionately working towards a goal, we have to keep that passion on all the time. Every moment that passion must drive us. No other thought but our passion. Great work is done only with such passion. You can achieve impossible with this kind of passion.
The third teaching is passion itself. Waves are passionate to meet the shores. They think of nothing but the shore. Similarly we must develop passion for something. Love creates such passion. Romantic love can do that and so can the love for human beings, like Mother Teresa had. Develop passion for something. Whatever may be your occupation, if you develop passion for excellence, you will get unbelievable results. Let us develop that passion. Let us say - I will passionately work in a manner so that I am satisfied only with the best results. I will keep this passion on forever in my work. I will do everything with passion and will make sure that I achieve great results.
Take inspiration from the passion of waves and you shall achieve success, great success.
