Making a Change at Work

Posted by admin on October 16th, 2008 — Posted in Biz Opps, Hall Of Websters, The Marketing Way

Today is the last day of my regular office life. I recently found out about a program that uses referrals to make commissions on everyday products. My friend has started an at home business using affiliate marketing programs, and it is working out for her just perfectly. I am so happy to have found this opportunity, for I was getting very tired of the same old routine at work. I can not wait to get working on this new opportunity. The best part is, I get to be home with my family, while saving money on gas at the same time.
Many of my friends have asked me what I do for a living, and I suspect that they are jealous. I can not say that I blame them, for I have a pretty good situation. I work at something dealing with affiliate marketing programs. This basically mean that I get people to purchase services or products from websites, then receive payment for that referral. It is really all about getting people to buy the products that they already need through the vendors that I control. It is such a simple program, and I think that any of my friends could handle it with little effort.

Website Optimisation & Design: Which Screen Resolution to Design for?

Posted by admin on June 6th, 2008 — Posted in Hall Of Websters

It is at times a common mistake for web designers, especially beginners, to create a website which is not optimised for various screen resolutions. With over 40 different screen resolutions, it is extremely important to optimise your web pages for the most popular screen resolutions so that your web pages can be viewed by a greater number of online visitors.

Here are some basic facts to consider when designing for screen resolutions:

- 800×600 is the minimum resolution offered on most PCs and notebooks. 800×600 is also the preferred viewing option for 14% of internet users.

- The most popular resolutions used by approximately 60% of online users is 1024 x 768, followed by 1280×1024 and other resolutions, with 26% of internet users.

Designing for a wide spectrum of resolutions is therefore essential. But how is this achieved?

The process of designing for all resolutions is achieved through a “lowest-to-highest” resolution technique. Which ever image editing or web building application you are using, it is important to set your working area or table width to a resolution within 800 x 600. A suitable area of 770 x 560 is recommended for best viewing in a web browser on a 800 x 600 screen resolution. This recommended area will not only alleviate horizontal page scrolling but will keep your pages user friendly and easy to read.

Designing web pages for all resolutions is especially useful for attracting and keeping visitors for a longer period of time on your site. Easy to use and read websites are always more likely to attract customers. A poorly designed and structured website with irritable horizontal scrolling will only drive away visitors and potential buyers.

Designing Beautiful Artist Websites - 12 Tips To Showcase Your Art

Posted by admin on June 3rd, 2008 — Posted in Hall Of Websters

1. Who needs an artists website?

Not everyone! If you are currently exhibiting in multiple high-end galleries and
making a handsome income, a website may not be for you. In fact, it might actually
work against you - some galleries may not like the perceived threat of you showing
your work independently on the internet. Better to make use of your gallery’s
websites.

On the other hand, any artist who can classify themselves as either “emerging” or
“mid-career” will probably benefit from having their own website to promote their
work. At this stage of your career it is important to be able to have a place where
anyone in the world can easily access and view your work. It is also important that
your work looks as wonderful as you know it is!

2. Who are you trying to impress?

Are you trying to engage a Soho gallery to sell your $20,000 paintings or sell $5
prints to children in Korea? “Art” encompasses a huge variety of media, audiences,
and budgets, and you need to be very clear about who you are targeting with your
site. That Soho gallery might not be impressed when they see your online-store
selling prints and art cards - but on the other hand, you could make a very
handsome living if you really knew how to market those art cards. If you want to
have multiple marketing strategies, you might even need to think about more than
one website and maybe using a non-de-plume.

3. How should your website fit in with your overall art marketing strategy?

This is maybe the most important question you will need to consider in developing a
website presence. A website is not an end in itself - it is only really effective when it
is part of a larger overall marketing strategy for your art. This would include old-
style hard-copy portfolios, lots of in-person gallery visits and presentations, regular
(physical) showings of your work, and developing relationships with the art world.
An effectively planned website can greatly compliment and simplify your other
marketing efforts.

4. Is there a real market for art on the internet?

There is art business transacting on the internet, although we have not been able to
find reliable statistics on the level of sales or the segmentation of the market into
sales of originals and reproductions. It is probably fair to say that well-known work
from established artists will sell because this art has a known market-value. For
emerging artists, the picture is more complex - there is something to the
experience of an original work of art that can never be seen or felt on a computer
screen.

The sale of reproductions is another issue - their lower cost makes them a less risky
gamble for the customer especially if your website provides a satisfactory return
policy.

One thing is for sure - it will be increasingly important to have a website presence
as an artist as more buyers become comfortable with the internet.

5. Should I have my own website or should I simply use one of the many artist
website portfolio services?

This is an excellent question. There are many great artists website portfolio services
available online today. As an example, check out Absolute Arts
(www.absolutearts.com) and Artspan (www.artspan.com). These services are really
online galleries where for a variable fee you can upload images of your work
together with bios, artist statements, resumes, etc. The advantage of this type of
approach is that it is a “connector” site - meaning that a lot of people visit there
including dealers, galleries, etc. That doesn’t mean that they will actually see your
work as there are thousands of artists represented by these services - but there is a
chance.

A great example of the value of this type of website was the jurying process for the
2005 Florence Biennale. Hundred of artists were selected simply because their work
looked great and they had it available to see on these large connector sites. We
think that this type of jury process will become more prevalent in the future as
galleries and show curators become moresavvy with the internet.

The down side to these gallery-sites is that there is no flexibility to show your work
they way you would like to and their selling fees are normally very high.

Remember the times you’ve been taken into the dimmer room in a commercial
gallery? How that art which looked fairly good on the main gallery wall suddenly
became something you had to take home under your arm? That is how a good
website should showcase your work too. Choices of background color, layout, image
size and quality, fonts, logos and text all combine to represent your work in the
most beautiful way. That is what you can have with your own website - as well as
complete control. Another advantage is that if you want to sell your work online it is
much less expensive to do it from your own site.

For our art we use both website options and we find they compliment each other
very nicely!

6. What do galleries and art dealers like to see when they look at an artist website?

Galleries have about as many views of how work should be showcased as there are
stars in the sky. But the wonderful thing is that these skills and preferences have
been developed through the process of really selling art. Don’t ever under-estimate
the experience and skill required to do this consistently - at Beautiful Websites For
Artists we take out hats off to good art salespeople.

There are, however, some common elements which most dealers and galleries
would agree on which could be summarized as follows:

• Keep it simple and elegant
• Keep the focus on the art itself
• Don’t overpower the look of the art with a site that looks too busy
• Be VERY careful of “Designerish” effects like flash movies. In the time it takes to
play your exotic flash-based entry page, the gallery will have already moved on to
look at the next artists website.
• Everything you would have in a hard-copy portfolio should be there - bios, artist
statements, resumes, etc as well as clear information on how to contact you by
phone, email, fax, and snail-mail.
• Be aware of the potential positive or negative reaction you might experience from
selling reproductions of your work online. Some galleries will be impressed that you
are obviously business-savvy enough to be able to sell your work in this way. Others
might consider it a threat to any potential sales relationship they might have with
you.

7. How can I showcase my work in the most beautiful way?

There is really no getting away from the fact that you need to have visual design
skills to create a beautiful artist website. One of the main reasons we started
Beautiful Websites For Artists was because we were tired of seeing so much
beautiful art showcased so poorly on some of the ugliest websites you could hope
to find!

That said, here are some basic thoughts:

• Keep the website simple and elegant
• Keep the focus on the art itself
• Structure the site into different galleries and sections to compliment the work -
don’t put everything on a few pages. Think of a gallery with different exhibition and
information spaces.
• Choose a background color that compliments and does not overpower the work.
Think of the colors you would use in a physical gallery to showcase your work -
neutral colors like crmes, whites and grays are normally safe. Black can also look
surprisingly good - it has the effect of totally focusing the attention on the art itself
• Lean towards a minimalist layout - a “busy” site design will normally detract from
the work.
• Choose fonts, logos to harmonize with the work
• Copy should create the underlying feeling or environment for the site - it can
create a sense of mystery or openness to compliment the feeling of the art.
• Use high quality images from professionally photographed work - the “Garbage in
- garbage out” principle applies here too!

8. How will customers and galleries find my website?

There are really three primary ways that someone would find your website. They
could find you through a search engine like Google. Typically after your site has
been up for a couple of months, search engines will find you easily if someone was
to perform a search on your name.

Lets say however that your work is classified as “Southwestern Art” and someone did
a search on that term. It is very unlikely that your site would be listed in the first few
results pages because there are so many other sites in competition. Getting your
work to show up in the top results of such a search will require optimization of the
website for search engines during the design process AND a lot of work from you
afterwards to link your site to as many possible relevant sites on the internet. This is
a lot of effort - no matter what anyone tells you!

The next way that people will find your site is very simple - you will tell them!
Example Phone Conversation with Gallery dealer:

Dealer (Bob): That sounds nice Michelle but I’m a very busy person. I’d prefer to
take a look at your work before we arrange a meeting. Do you have a website I could
look at?

Michelle: Well of course Bob, please check out my work at www.michelleartist.com.

Dealer (Bob): OK Michelle - let me just take a look. …….. Oh My gosh, what
awesome work! I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m sending out a truck right away
to come and pick up your work. Do you accept credit cards - I’d like to pay you
$100,000 right away so that I don’t miss this chance. And would Tuesday at 12
noon be convenient for an interview with Art in America?

Well - we can dream! But you get the idea. This is actually the most powerful way we
have found to make use of a website. If you think of your audience you are probably
going to require a highly focused marketing campaign to a relatively small number
of potential clients and partners.

Of course you might build your art career around selling thousands of reproductions
- in which case understanding how to rank highly with search engines is important.

Another way to tell people website is to participate in online forums. There are a
number of these - some specializing in art subjects. If you become visible in some
of these forums people will check your website.

Email marketing is yet another way to tell people about your site. You can use
mailing lists you have developed yourself, or you can purchase email mailing lists. In
addition, Rich-Text emails allow you to showcase your work as beautifully designed
images - just like a web-page.

The third primary way in which people will find your website is through on-line
advertising. For example, if your art is minimalist and modern in style, a banner add
on an interior design website focused on the same minimalist ethic could draw a lot
of traffic to your site. Some artists have experienced considerable success in this
way!

9. Do I need to be able to sell my work on the internet?

Another important question. It really depends on what you are selling. If you want to
sell originals for thousands of dollars, our experience suggests that a buyer will
probably want to see your work in-person, or have an existing relationship with
you. In which case you could easily transact the sale over the phone.

On the other hand, if part of your business model is to sell inexpensive
reproductions, you probably would want to have at least basic e-commerce
capability on your site. That way, business can be transacted on the site regularly
without you having to personally supervise each sale - you still need time to be an
artist remember J

To some customers, the fact that you have an e-commerce capable website also
signals that you are “real” and “a serious business”.

Some people still have issues with purchasing over the internet, but it is becoming a
trusted buying environment.

10. Should I develop my own website or pay a designer?

It really depends. Some things to bear in mind:

• Do you have visual design skills/training? Be honest - Many great artists don’t J
• When do you want the site ready (Next month or next year?)
• How much of your artist-time can you afford to give up to develop the site and
what is the $ value of that time?
• Will you need to invest in new software or even a new computer to do the work?
• Will you need to invest time and/or money in software training?

11. What should I look for in choosing a website-designer?

The most important thing here is to remember what you are trying to create - most
likely you want a beautiful online gallery space to elegantly show your beautiful
work - this is very different from building a high-volume website selling printer ink
cartridges and paper rolls!

So, simply put, you should not be interested in technical jargon as much as the
ability to design a space to present your work. You might also want to consider a
designer proficient in both web and print-based design. That way, should you
choose to, you can coordinate the look and feel of all your marketing materials -
website, letterhead, brochures, etc.

Also be careful of some “high-end” designers. If you take a look at some websites
from design firms, you will notice a lot of visual complexity and sometimes high-
tech effects that can be cumbersome and slow. This will not showcase your art well
as it draws attention to the design rather than the art!

There is no getting around it - you have to do your homework!

12. How much does a website cost to develop??

An art website could cost you anything from a few hundred dollars to many tens of
thousands of dollars. Typically, the bigger design firms have larger overheads and
will be significantly more expensive. On the other hand, Joe down the street can
probably build you a website for $200 - but you probably don’t want that website J

At Beautiful Websites For Artists we have packages ranging from $500 to $2000 for
simple elegant artists websites with different levels of functionality. We can also
develop fully customized sites to your specifications with prices based on
requirements.

In addition to development costs, you will need to pay monthly web-hosting and
ecommerce fees that could range from less that $5/month for a simple sight to
$100/month for a site with complex ecommerce functionality. Typically, the hosting
cost for a typical site is between $5 and $25/month

40,000 New Blogs Are Started Daily - How Your Web Hosting Business Can Cash in

Posted by admin on June 3rd, 2008 — Posted in Hall Of Websters

The fact that an estimated 40,000 new blogs are being started daily should be of great interest to anybody already in the web hosting business or intending to go into it. Especially those planning to go into the business as affiliates or as resellers because this group of online entrepreneurs are in a very good position to cash in quickly on this amazing growth rate of blogs with hardly any investment necessary.

While it is true that a vast majority of blogs are hosted free, it is also true that many blogs are gaining high traffic so quickly that they are forced to quickly find paid web hosting as they exceed their allocated bandwidth.

The other fact to bear in mind is that virtually all successful bloggers own several blogs. This is significant because it is not easy to own several websites since lots of technical know-how and time are required to maintain a single website, let alone several. This is not the case with a blog that mainly requires content and very little technical knowledge to run very successfully. In terms of business volumes this simply means that a web hosting business that targets blogs is bound to grow a lot faster than the one that only seeks clients from the ranks of traditional websites.

The other significant factor in blogs that should be of great benefit to any web hosting business is the huge traffic that blogs seem to enjoy almost effortlessly.

All a web host entrepreneur needs to do, is to find a way to advertise their web hosting services to this blog traffic. There are several ways of doing this. You can for example look for acceptable ways of creating as many links from the blogs to your web hosting sites as possible. You can even start your very own blog on the subject.

Make sure you have handful of FTP sub-accounts also to provide your clients/users password protected directories. This is very much useful wherein your clients / users can use the FTP to upload /download files from particular password protected folder of your website.

4. Backup - Most of the Hosts take Automated Backups. But users do not take much care on this while choosing the Hosting Pack. This feature is as essential as anyother in this list.

Hence check if SMTP support is provided.

9. SPAM ASSASIN - No email user is free from a spam attack. Hence you need to have Spam Filters installed on the server where your website resides.

10. IP - If your website prefers SSL Support (https://) as time grows, makes ure you get a DEDICATED IP. Most of the websites are hosted on shared IPs. Ask your Hosting Provider about the extra charges involved in getting a dedicated IP and SSL Support. Note : For SSL (https://), you need to buy a Digital Certificate.

You can call the above List anything you like. Essentials

Designing A Website That Sells

Posted by admin on April 16th, 2008 — Posted in Hall Of Websters

Would you buy meat from a grocery store that left the bad meat
in with the good meat or wasn’t clean? Would you buy a car from
a sales lot that had totaled automobiles on the front lot? I
wouldn’t and neither would you. Your website is your grocery
store; your car lot. You must have an atmosphere that is
pleasing to buyers. One that tells that buyer that you are not
an amateur, but instead a trained, seasoned professional. Your
site is a direct reflection of your product and that is why that
having a well designed website can make or break your sales.

The first thing to keep in mind when designing your website, is
“surfability”. Take a few minutes a look around at several web
pages. What makes them appealing? Were there some that you
closed out of immediately? Why? Take notes and do your research.
Keep in mind that when a person visits your site they have a
goal in mind. They are either seeking information or shopping
for a product. Give the person what they want without having to
search for it. Be sure that all the information on your site is
relevant to your product. Make the buyer think that they need
your product to solve their problem.

Your main page serves a very specific purpose. It should be an
avenue by which the customer can shop your site. It should be
easy to view and load very quickly. This is your first
impression and we all know that first impressions can either
close the deal or loose the deal. Make it simple. It is best to
have links that are easily viewable by the reader that will
navigate them to where they want to be. Tables are often a great
choice when deciding on a way to design the main page of your
site. Your main page should load very quickly, chances are if it
takes the page more than ten seconds to load even on a 56k
modem, the customer will click away to save time, hoping to find
the information or product elsewhere. To increase the loading
speed of your main page you should avoid large graphics or
excessive graphics. To many banners or special effects can cause
a page to load slowly as well.

To make your web site more appealing to the eyes, you should
stick to mild colors. If your site is a content site where the
user will be doing a lot of reading, it is best to stick to
black and white. Color can be added when using tables, as a way
to brighten up the page, but remember to keep the overall look
of the page professional and appealing to the audience that will
be visiting most often. Since screen resolutions vary among
monitors, it is a good idea to set the pixels to a standard
800×600. You may also choose to set the tables in your web page
to span a percentage of the page rather than a set number of
inches. This will be sure to accommodate all screen sizes. You
should remember that a lot of Internet users will not use the
same browser as you, and therefore you should be sure that your
site looks as good on other browsers as it does your own. You
can do this by downloading several browsers through which to
look at your page.

Be aware of the fact that the overall look of your website is a
way to make money. The appearance of the site, if designed
properly, can be an excellent marketing strategy for your
product or service.

You Too Can Have an Amazing Website

Posted by admin on April 15th, 2008 — Posted in Hall Of Websters

It is a well-known fact that a successful business depends greatly on how it is marketed. With an ever increasing dependence on the web, the use of a professional website is not only a necessity, but a priority. Although it is a common thought that only large businesses can have top-notch websites, with the tools available today what seemed impractical can now be a reality. Best of all, designing an extraordinary website can be done without hiring expensive web developers to create your site from scratch. Usually the first comment I get from my customers is, “I have the idea, but not the tools.” In this article, I will recommend which tools are the most helpful and where to find these tools so that you too can have an amazing website.

So you say, “I have the idea, but not the tools. What are these tools and where do I get them?” Let me answer that question with a question. Have you ever heard of web site templates? If not, they’re your answer to a professional website at a very reasonable price, usually around $60 to $70. A website template is a ready-made website design created for you to use as the foundation for quick and high-quality web development. There are thousands of templates available online so you are virtually guaranteed to find something that suits your design and format needs. It can be as easy as simply adding your text to the template or rearranging photos along with your text to produce the outcome you have been searching for.

Finding web site templates is easy, but be aware of the differences in template providers you will come across. Performing a Google or Yahoo search with the phrase “web site templates” will yield several vendor choices and not all of them offer the quality you demand. They all promise the best templates around, but that is obviously not the case. So, how do you find the right template vendor? First, visit some of the sites you come across and examine their templates. You will know you are on the right track if you answer “Yes” to the question, “Am I impressed with these templates?” Always trust your taste.

Next, explore how many templates the vendor offers and how often their database is updated. As a rule of thumb, the more they have the better they are. This helps assure you that your choice will be more unique than otherwise. If you choose a template from a vendor who only offers a few select quality templates then the chances are that a great deal of other customers have chosen that same template. You certainly don’t want a website that is practically identical to dozens of others online. You will also want a vendor who updates their site on a regular basis. Weekly updates are good, but daily updates are even better. This guarantees that they will have fresh templates on a regular basis for you to choose from.

Finally, you want to make sure that your template is editable. This means that your template will come with the appropriate files (PSD, HTML, SWF, and FLA) that will allow you to make the necessary changes to your template. Ask you vendor before making your selection. Most templates come with these files, but it is better to be safe than sorry. You should be able to download your selection immediately or your vendor will provide a link to do so.

Great! Now you have a really impressive template and can’t wait to make the changes that will get you a completed website that blows away your competition. Well, you’re halfway there. You have one more important choice to make. Who will do the editing? You will either have someone internally run with the project or you can hire someone and outsource the job. If you decide to handle things internally make sure you have the necessary software to edit your files and someone who is somewhat familiar with how to do the editing. This is what your template vendor probably didn’t tell you. Certainly it isn’t as easy as purchasing a template and plugging in text. If it were then there wouldn’t be a market for web design and development companies. If you’re confident about handling it yourself then great, but be careful. You might find yourself investing a lot of time and money trying to get your desired results.

Your alternate choice, hiring a development firm, will almost certainly get your site looking and functioning the way you want it, but for a fee, of course. It is easy to find a development firm to handle your needs and you can find several online. Simply search with the keyphrase “web site design”. Call or email a few of them explaining your situation and needs and ask for a quote to perform the editing for you. Depending on the amount of editing you will require you should receive price quotes in the $500 -$1500 range. This is a very reasonable price to pay for a professional website. Most likely, you will be glad you did.

How to Profit Online Quickly?

Posted by admin on April 7th, 2008 — Posted in Hall Of Websters

Wouldnt it be great if every prospective customer will email
you what they really need and would suggest the kind of products
you have to produce? That would be such an easy way of get rich
quick process in online marketing. Usually, however, it is not
the way to quickly earn money online.

With the advent of the Internet, people are now aware of the
viability of these new medium of information when it comes to
earning money. Many people even contend that they can easily get
rich just by exploring the possibilities of high-profit in
online businesses.

However, the truth is, there is just no nippy fixes in order to
be successful with your online business. Nevertheless, for
people who wish to earn money, not necessarily big but enough to
buy yourself a new cell phone, you really can if you just follow
one of the suggested profit-making schemes below:

1. Online auctions

An online auction such as eBay is one way of earning profit the
fast way, (well, not too fast) because you have to wait for a

Ebay and Paypal

Posted by admin on April 6th, 2008 — Posted in Hall Of Websters

E-Bay and Paypal are two giant firms which are involved in sales
transactions of customers. E-Bay is an online portal in which
buyers could auction and bid items for sale. On the other hand,
Paypal is the most popular online payment system used through
credit cards. The teaming up of both firms is inevitable because
E-Bay provides the goods to be purchased while PayPal provides
the resources to be used.

E-Bay has indeed grown as the number one destination of online
shopping through auctions. E-Bay offers a variety of choices
when it comes to books, food, gadget, technology stuff, and many
others. The variety and diversity of E-Bay makes it the most
visited site whenever buyers are thinking of something to
purchase. It is also a favorite destination for online shoppers
who want to have a quality bargain of the items they want to
buy. On the other hand, Paypal is the most reliable online
payment system utilized whenever holding transactions. The firm
claims that they have 16 million users worldwide. Despite of
such successes for both firms, there are still many criticisms
regarding the nature of both businesses.

E-Bay is often criticized as a portal that is not pro-buyers
instead, it some people consider it as pro-sellers. Some buyers
accuse E-Bay as not being true to their business and does not
really live up to their word. On the other hand, Paypal does not
really receive a lot of complaints but when it does, no one
seems to mind. This is because their customer service department
does not do their job well. No one really assists the customers
and when they reply, it seems like the customer waited for 20
years before an action was done.

Due to the partnership of these two companies, many speculated
that E-Bay would acquire Paypal. Many people were not in
agreement to this deal because they believe that once E-Bay had
acquired Paypal, the rotten service of the firm would eventually
be more than worst. Aside from that, competition would also
diminish in the market. Despite the said speculations, both
firms deny that a joint venture or acquisition between the two
companies would happen. Both firms insist that they would
continue each other’s operations separately and not as a joint
company. Both firms also expressed that their partnership
between each other is solid but not to the point of
collaborating with each other.
